This strategic move enables Nigerian e-commerce businesses to process payments from American Express cardholders, marking a significant advancement in cross-border transaction capabilities.

The initiative allows holders of American Express cards – spanning personal, business, and corporate categories – to conduct direct transactions with Nigerian online businesses through the Flutterwave platform. The service’s reach is set to extend beyond Nigeria, with plans already in motion to implement similar capabilities in Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda, strengthening the payment infrastructure across multiple African nations.

For Nigerian merchants utilizing Flutterwave’s services, this collaboration opens up access to an entirely new customer segment, comprising American Express Card Members both within Africa and internationally. The integration streamlines the payment process, making transactions more efficient for both businesses and consumers while expanding the potential customer base for African enterprises.

The partnership builds on Flutterwave’s impressive track record, which includes processing more than 630 million transactions worth over USD $31 billion. The company’s client portfolio includes prominent names like Uber and Air Peace, demonstrating its capability to serve diverse industries across the continent.

Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express, characterized the partnership as mutually advantageous. She emphasized how the collaboration increases payment options for Nigerian merchants while expanding the utility of American Express cards in the region, creating value for both businesses and consumers.

This development coincides with Flutterwave’s recent expansion initiatives, including obtaining a Payment Service Provider license in Ghana, which enables the company to operate independently without relying on third-party services.
